Logic Analyzer Capture Signals at High Speeds

In recent decades, developers of digital circuits have used logic analyzers as the main means of assessing the correctness of projects. Today's skyrocketing clock speeds have made signal integrity especially important in all parts of the system, including for testing. To achieve an accurate result, it is no longer enough to simply randomly connect logic analyzer probes. It became necessary to take into account such parameters as the location of the probe, its load, and also the proximity to the transmission line. This article describes some of the pitfalls that await those who are engaged in debugging high-speed digital circuits. Probe loading models and the effect of probe placement are also discussed. Finally, the two main methods for connecting to a high speed system are described - loopback sensing and resistor drop sensing.

Using International Rectifier's Ballast Designer for Electronic Ballast Design

Today, more and more often, the question of energy saving when lighting premises arises. The minimum investment of time and money for the design of electronic control gear (ECG) is a determining factor in the implementation of the project. Designing high frequency electronic ballasts and sizing components for different types of lamps can be an engineering challenge with many unknowns. The article will discuss an effective design tool for electronic ballasts from International Rectifier - the Ballast Designer Assistant program.

Development of wireless devices in the 2.4 GHz range: element base, software, debugging and design tools

The 2.4 GHz frequency band has recently gained increasing popularity in monitoring, control, telemetry and data transmission systems. The increased interest in it was not least due to the emergence of the new ZigBee wireless technology and the underlying IEEE802.15.4 standard. Many articles have already been published describing this technology and the features of the standard, so we will dwell in more detail on the issues of choosing an element base, developing hardware and designing software for wireless devices.

InterRAT handover and cell handover test using two base station emulators

The ability to perform handover verification without service interruption is a key requirement for all cellular networks. Historically, this has been noticed in the task of supporting voice calls during handover in a cellular voice system. This situation has now changed due to the need to support cellular transitions in the presence of many types of services (voice, video and data transmission), as well as in the implementation of pause-free various wireless technologies (GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSDPA). This expansion of coverage significantly complicates the compliance testing requirements. In addition to the latter, user equipment (UE) developers are now looking for more cost effective solutions that will provide extended test coverage and support their need for validation and retesting. This article discusses how two Agilent 8960 systems can be used for this purpose.

Getting a flat DAC frequency response

DACs typically convert bandwidth-limited digital signals. The frequency response of the DACs themselves is not flat, but rather lowers the high frequencies of the analog output. For example, at 80% of the Nyquist frequency fNYQUIST, (fNYQUIST = fS/2), the amplitude attenuation is 2.42 dB. This level of loss is unacceptable in some broadband applications requiring flat frequency response. Fortunately, there are several methods available to deal with frequency jitter in a DAC. These techniques include increasing the speed of the DAC using interpolation, pre-equalization filtering, and output equalization filtering. All these methods eliminate the influence of the sin (x)/x factor.
