The GY-271 module on the HMC5883L microchip is a three-axis digital magnetoresistive compass (three-coordinate magnetometer). It is used in positioning systems, tourist equipment and is especially needed in aircraft models, multicopters.
On the board of the GY-271 module there are pull-up resistors necessary for reliable operation, as well as a dc/dc converter, which allows the module to be powered from 5V. In general, the module can work with controllers with 5V signal level via the I2C bus. Three magnetoresistive sensors are used as sensors. Algorithms collect information from magnetometers and other sensors through the I2C bus without the involvement of the system processor.
To use it as a conventional compass for orientation on the ground, it is necessary to strictly fix the board horizontally, because any tilt will lead to the inclusion of the 3rd axis in the work, which will take on part of the horizontal components of the Earth's magnetic field.
