Insulating tapes are a consumable material that is used in electrical work, for winding wires and cables for the purpose of electrical insulation.
There are industrial insulating tapes on the market, so-called professional, and universal tapes (for wide range of applications). A feature of professional tapes is their pronounced specialization, i.e. depending on the requirements of the working environment, individual parameters of the belt have increased performance. For example, belts with a thickness of up to 0.25 mm are offered for protection against mechanical stress (while the usual belt thickness is 0.11 mm - 0.15 mm).

Performance characteristics include:


- adhesion (from Lat. Adhaesio - adhesion) - "adhesive force". The adhesive properties of electrical tape are determined by two main parameters: thickness and type of adhesive layer. The adhesive layer is usually 15 microns thick. The adhesive layer determines the stickiness of the tape. In this case, the type of adhesive is important: acrylic or rubber. The difference between these adhesives is that for tapes with an acrylic layer, the strength of the adhesive bond increases over time. And for tapes with a rubber layer, complete adhesion is achieved almost instantly;

- dielectric strength or breakdown voltage (unit of measurement - kV/mm) - determines the maximum voltage that the electrical tape can withstand. The electrical strength of the universal tape is 36.7 kV/mm, therefore the tape is a reliable insulating material for electrical work;

- tensile strength (unit of measure - MPa) and elongation at break (unit of measure - %) - characterize the elastic capabilities of the tape. The higher the elastic properties of the tape, the better the process of bundling is performed. The tensile strength of the universal tape reaches 15 MPa; relative elongation up to 190%;

Recommendations for the use of electrical tape:

1. Temperature. The recommended temperature for working with electrical tape is in the range from 20°to 40°C. It is not recommended to use electrical tape at temperatures below 10°C.

2. Type of surface. It is not recommended to apply the tape on silicone coatings and fluoropolymers. When applying electrical tape to easily disintegrating, crumbling, exfoliating materials (fibreboards, concrete, untreated wood), it is necessary to pre-treat the surfaces with primers.

3. Surface preparation. The surface to which the electrical tape is applied must be dry and free from dust and other contaminants, especially oily nature.

4. Insulating tape must be stored in closed warehouses at an ambient temperature of +5°C to +35°C, relative humidity no more than 80% and at a distance of at least one meter from heating devices.

5. It is forbidden to store PVC insulating tape together with organic solvents, acids, chemicals, flammable and combustible liquids and other aggressive media.
