The L298 motor driver serves as an intermediate link between the microcontroller and the motor. The main function of the driver is to protect the microcontroller from motor overloads.
The L298 is a 2-channel, which makes it possible to control two motors or one bipolar stepper motor using the L298 driver.
The motor driver is controlled either from the Arduino controller or from another microprocessor control device using special programs. There are jumpers on the board that can be used to enable and disable the module output signals. Jumpers are designated ENA and ENB for turning on/off the power supply of the outputs OUT1, OUT2 and OUT3, OUT4, respectively.
If the ENA jumper is set, the inputs IN1, IN2 will control the outputs OUT1, OUT2. If the ENB jumper is set, the inputs IN3, IN4 will control the outputs OUT3, OUT4.
Inputs IN2, IN3 pulse-width modulation - are responsible for smooth change of the motor rotation speed. If you do not need PWM control, then you just need to apply a logical unit to the corresponding input. Inputs IN1, IN4 - responsible for the direction of rotation of the motor.
There is a jumper on the board that switches the 5V supply voltage of the on-board logic. When the jumper is on, the logic part is powered from the internal converter of the module. When the jumper is off, power is taken from an external 5V source. When the motor supply voltage is over 12V, it is recommended to power the driver logic from an external 5V source, since the linear converter will get very hot.
