Recommendations for the use of VHB adhesive tapes
1. Temperature
The optimum application temperature for VHB adhesive tapes is between+20°C and+40°C. It is not recommended to work with the tape at temperatures below +10°C. An exception is the special tape 4951, which can be applied at temperatures down to 0°C.
2. Abrasive processing.
The adhesion of the tape to metal can be improved by pre-abrading the surface with a fine-grained sandpaper, followed by cleaning the surface with a solvent. Abrasive blasting is required when
the presence of corrosion on the metal surface.
3. Cleaning the surface.
Both surfaces to be joined must be cleaned with a 50% isopropyl alcohol solution 50:50 in water. Remove solvent residues with a dry, clean cloth. It is not recommended to use hydrocarbon solvents for surface cleaning.
4. Dependence of the strength of the adhesive bond on time.
At room temperature, the strength of the adhesive bond after 20 minutes after applying the tape is approximately 50% of the limit value, after 24 hours - 90%, after 72 hours - 100%. Increasing the temperature will shorten the time to reach maximum adhesion (1 hour at 65°C).
5. Pressure
The strength of the adhesive bond of the adhesive tape to the surface increases with an increase in the contact area of the adhesive
tape/surface. To speed up the establishment of this contact, it is necessary to firmly press the adhesive tape to the surface. After connecting the parts to be glued, it is necessary to ensure a short-term strong pressure of the parts
to each other. The recommended contact pressure is 100 kPa.
Learn more about the properties of VHB ™ mounting tape
Double-sided tape 3M ™ VHB ™ (VHB - extra high strength) is widely used as an alternative to traditional mechanical installation methods (rivets, screws, welds, etc.) due to the unique ability to leave an intact and even surface of the materials to be joined, and the joint line is invisible, providing attractive appearance of products. 3M ™ VHB ™ Double Sided Adhesive Tape is the result of more than 50 years of 3M leadership in adhesive tape and adhesives technology.
Advantages of 3M ™ VHB ™ assembly tape
High strength.
The 3M ™ VHB ™ Double Sided Tape is based on flexible, closed-cell acrylic polymers. Double-sided tape (assembly tape) on such a basis, in combination with special acrylic adhesives, has incomparably higher strength than traditional adhesive tapes - for example, foam tape.
Instant installation of products, cheaper assembly, saving time and labor costs.
Double-sided tape 3M ™ VHB ™ mounting tape provides a simple, fast and strong connection of parts, speeds up assembly operations, without requiring special training or production re-equipment. No drilling, welding, screws or glue required. The use of VHB ™ Double Sided Tape eliminates the need for finishing and cleaning of surfaces.
Saving materials.
The 3M ™ VHB ™ Double-Sided Tape offers significant material savings, both by reducing waste and using more cost-effective materials. Such a connection makes it possible to distribute the load over the entire area of the connection, and, therefore, to use thinner, lighter, flexible and less expensive materials.
New design possibilities and design freedom.
With the help of 3M ™ double-sided tape, you can create structures that would not be possible with other methods of installation. Double-sided tape 3M ™ VHB ™ does not damage the surface of the materials to be joined and is almost invisible between the parts to be joined.
Resistance to external influences.
Double-sided tape 3M ™ VHB ™ is significantly more resistant to environmental factors: UV radiation, moisture, salts, solvents, temperature compared to tapes based on foamed polymers. This is due to the closed-cell structure of the base of double-sided tape (assembly tape) and the chemical inertness of the acrylic polymers of which it is composed. Experiments in an accelerated aging apparatus have shown that the strength of the adhesive bond of double-sided tape practically does not change after 7000 hours of cyclic exposure to heat, humidity and radiation.
Viscosity and elasticity, shock and vibration resistance.
The fluidity (low viscosity) of the base ensures the penetration of 3M ™ double-sided adhesive tape into microrough surfaces and the creation of a strong adhesive bond. And the elasticity of 3M double-sided tape allows you to change the shape of the tape under load and restore it even after repeated deformation. The combination of these properties makes joints using 3M ™ VHB ™ double-sided tape especially resistant to shock and vibration.
Wide range of applications.
Double-sided tape 3M ™ VHB ™ can be successfully used in structures that are operated in conditions of significant wind loads (road signs, building windows) or subject to constant vibration (transport). 3M ™ Double-Sided Tape has proven itself to be effective when joining dissimilar materials (eg metal to plastic), especially in high temperature extremes. With the ability to stretch up to 600% of its thickness, 3M ™ VHB ™ Double-Sided Tape can easily compensate for the movement of parts with different coefficients of expansion relative to each other.
