Toroidal cores are designed to wind an insulated wire around the core body.
The most commonly used cores have an insulating polymer coating. This coating protects the inductive element from electrical breakdown and allows the use of standard enameled copper wires for winding. The color of the coating may indicate the grade of the polymer coating, but not the grade of ferrite.
Uncoated or damaged cores should either be tape-insulated before winding or use a solidly insulated wire. ¦
